Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
First non-elective hospital admission assessment by a family physician on the hospital's on-call roster who becomes the most responsible physician.
What it covers
A933 is the first hospital in-patient admission general assessment per patient per 30-day period when all of these apply: the physician is a GP or family physician on the hospital's on-call roster (whether or not on call that day); the admission is non-elective; and the physician is the most responsible physician (MRP) for the in-patient care (A7).
An admission assessment is the initial assessment rendered to admit the patient (GP40).
Billing rules
- Any further on-call admission assessment by the same physician for the same patient in the same 30 days is paid as a general re-assessment (A7).
- Not payable for an elective surgery admission when the same physician did a pre-operative assessment within 30 days of admission (GP41).
- Only one admission assessment is payable per admission. A transfer to another physician in the same hospital doesn't create another (GP40).
- If the physician already did a consultation, general assessment or general re-assessment in the ED or out-patient department before admitting, that service is the admission assessment (GP41).
- C933 is the in-patient listing for the same service, under the same conditions (A12).
Often billed with
- E082 MRP admission premium (+30%): once per admission, only when the MRP did the admission assessment, not for transfers within the hospital, and only if the physician isn't paid by the hospital for in-patient work (or that pay is reduced) (GP42).
- A933 counts toward the hospitalist premium for physicians with enough qualifying hospital services (GP103).
- FHO: A933A counts toward the special payment for hospital services (Agreement p.90, Schedule 3).
Common rejections
- VH9: The health number on the claim isn't registered with the Ministry. Check it against the patient's card or hospital record and resubmit.
- V18: OHIP's description is 'invalid admission/first visit date'. Check that the admission date on the claim is the date of this hospital admission.
- EH2: The health card version code doesn't match the Ministry's record. Get the current version code and resubmit.
- A36: OHIP's description is 'claimed by other practitioner'. Only one admission assessment is payable per admission, even when care is transferred (GP40), so check whether another physician billed it.
