Insertion of a non-biodegradable long-acting subcutaneous medication implant, such as Nexplanon. Not payable when given by injection.

What it covers

G318 is insertion of a non-biodegradable long-acting subcutaneous medication implant (J41). The Schedule gives Nexplanon as an example.

Biodegradable implants such as Zoladex are not G318; injections that don't meet G318's criteria are billed from the Injections listings on J54. Removal of an implant is billed as Z114 or Z115 (J41).

Billing rules

  • Not payable when the medication is provided by injection (J41).
  • Payable only when you personally insert the implant; it can't be delegated (J41).
  • Marked (+): add G700 when the insertion is the sole reason for the visit (J3, J41).
  • G700 is not payable in hospital, and is paid at 15% of its fee for patients enrolled to a capitation-based group (J3).
  • Payable in addition to an assessment at the same visit (J3).
  • FHO: not listed in Schedule 2 (core services), so not part of the base rate basket (Agreement pp.75–82).

Often billed with

  • G700 when insertion is the only reason for the visit (J3).
  • A007 or another assessment, or a consultation such as A905, at the visit where the implant is inserted (J3).
