Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Oxygen saturation measured by oximetry at rest, with or without supplemental oxygen. Only a hospital technical (H) fee is listed.

What it covers

J323 is a resting oxygen saturation check by oximetry, on room air or on oxygen (H6). It is the simplest of the oximetry listings; oximetry at rest and exercise, or during sleep, is J332, and J334/J336 cover studies with supplemental oxygen levels (H6).

Only a technical (H) fee is listed for J323; there is no professional (P) fee (H6).

Billing rules

  • Claim the technical component with suffix B (J323B) (H3).
  • The H component is payable only in a hospital or a hospital's approved off-site premises, and not for in-patients or patients admitted within 24 hours for the same condition (H1, GP11). Outside hospital only P fees are billable, and J323 has none (H3).
  • Not payable with J332, J315, J316, G315, G319, G111, G112, G570, G571, G582, G583, G574, G575 or any overnight sleep study (H6).
  • A permanent record of the study must be kept or J323 is not eligible for payment (H6).
  • Not payable for routine pre-operative screening for non-thoracic surgery unless needed for respiratory diagnosis, anaesthetic decisions or optimization (H3).

Common rejections

  • ADH: OHIP describes this as 'Cannot be billed together': J323 is not payable with J332, exercise studies (J315, J316), stress tests, echocardiograms or an overnight sleep study (H6).
  • VHC: OHIP describes this as 'SLI required for technical fee': a technical-component (suffix B) claim needs the service location indicator, and the H fee is only payable in a hospital or approved off-site premises (H1, GP11).
