Multiple sleep latency test: a daytime sleep study, with technical and professional components.
What it covers
J893 is the multiple sleep latency test, one of the two daytime sleep studies (J114). The other daytime study is the maintenance of wakefulness test, J894 (J114).
Sleep studies have a technical (H) component and a professional (P) component. The H component includes the technical elements of non-invasive diagnostic procedures; if the physician is physically present, that presence is part of both components (J107).
Billing rules
- Claim the technical component with suffix B and the professional component with suffix C (J107).
- Outside a hospital or off-site premises, only the professional (P) component is payable; ICHSC technical costs are in the Schedule of Facility Costs (J107).
- Technical component: hospital or off-site premises only, technician in constant attendance, staff and equipment meeting CPSO Standards (J108).
- Professional component: the interpreting physician must meet CPSO criteria for practising sleep medicine, and a qualified physician must be accessible throughout the study (J108).
- Only one J893 and one J894 per patient per facility per 12 months, and J894 is not payable the same day as J893 (J114).
- Not payable if the recording isn't sufficient for a diagnostic interpretation under CPSO Standards (J114).
- EEG codes (G414, G415, G418, G540–G546, G554, G555) are not payable with any sleep study, and special visit premiums don't apply (J114, J108).
- Above the limits, the study needs Ministry prior approval (J107).
Common rejections
- ADH: OHIP describes this as 'Cannot be billed together': J894 isn't payable the same day as J893, and EEG codes aren't payable with a sleep study (J114).
- AM1: OHIP describes this as 'Service Limit Exceeded': only one J893 per patient per facility per 12 months (J114).
- VHC: OHIP describes this as 'SLI required for technical fee': a technical-component (suffix B) claim needs the service location indicator, and the H fee is only payable in a hospital or approved off-site premises (H1, GP11).
