Explanation

Diagnostic interview or counselling with a child and/or parent for a psychological problem or learning disability, billed per half-hour unit.
What it covers
K008 is an interview listing: a diagnostic interview and/or counselling with the child, the parent, or both, about a psychological problem or a learning disability (A28).
Interviews include gathering information from, discussing with and advising the people interviewed about the patient's condition and care (GP61). Psychological testing is not an insured service (A28).
Billing rules
- Claim under the child's health number (A28).
- Must be a booked, separate appointment of at least 20 minutes; if not separately booked, OHIP pays a lesser fee (A28, GP61).
- Not payable when the information gathered is part of the history normally taken in a consultation or assessment (A28, GP61).
- Must be rendered personally by the physician, or it becomes uninsured (GP61).
- Units are ½ hour or major part: 1 unit = at least 20 minutes, 2 = 46, 3 = 76, 4 = 106 (GP61).
- Record start and stop times in the chart, or the service is not eligible for payment (GP7).
- K008 is on the list of services payable the same day as counselling (GP58).
- May be given by video or phone as comprehensive virtual care; add K300A or K301A (Appendix J AJ1, A70).
Often billed with
- K013 or K033 counselling the same day, since K008 is on the counselling same-day list (GP58).
- E080 first visit after hospital discharge (GP28).
- FHO: K008 is an in-basket core service (FHO Agreement Schedule 2, p.79).
Common rejections
- EH2: The version code doesn't match OHIP's record; for K008 make sure it's the child's card, since the claim goes under the child's health number (EH2 guide; A28).
- VJ7: The claim reached OHIP more than three months after the service date; resubmit as stale-dated only if it was first sent on time (VJ7 guide; GP9).
- EH4: The patient's OHIP coverage had ended before the service date; check the health number and the patient's eligibility (EH4 guide).
