Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Per-unit extension to a psychiatric consultation when direct contact runs past the threshold for that consultation; maximum 6 units per patient per day.

What it covers

K630 extends one of the listed psychiatric consultations when the psychiatrist has to spend more time on the same day in direct contact with the patient and/or the patient's relatives, representative or other caregivers. The time may be consecutive or non-consecutive (A185).

Time spent on any other separately billable service, and non-patient-facing time such as chart or imaging review, doesn't count (A185).

Billing rules

  • Unit means half an hour or major part; time-keeping rules of GP7 apply, so start and stop times must be in the chart (A185, GP7).
  • Maximum six units per patient per physician per day (A185).
  • Units start only after the minimum time for the consultation: 60 minutes for A195, A895, A191, A192, and A197 or A198 as a sole service; 90 minutes for A190 and A795; 120 minutes for A695, A197 + A198 or A191 + A192 the same day (A185).
  • Example from the A185 table: A195 + 1 unit needs 76 minutes in total, + 2 units needs 106 minutes (A185).
  • Detention (K001) is not payable with A190, A191, A192, A195, A197, A198, A695, A795 or A895, so K630 is the way to bill the extra time (GP31).
  • Video only, never telephone (AJ2).

Often billed with

  • A195 psychiatric consultation, after the first 60 minutes (A185).
  • A190 special psychiatric consultation, after 90 minutes (A185).
  • A197 and/or A198 consultative interviews for a patient under 22 (A185).
