Explanation

Diagnostic urethroscopy: looking inside the urethra with a scope.
What it covers
Z617 is diagnostic urethroscopy (T10). Urethroscopy with biopsy is Z618, and urethral biopsy without endoscopy is Z616 (T10).
Billing rules
- Diagnostic cystoscopy Z606 is described as 'with or without urethroscopy', so a urethroscopy done at cystoscopy falls under Z606 (T7).
- Not payable with Z638 (endoscopic treatment of reflux) (T3) or with Z612 (endoscopic urethral realignment) (T11).
- With biopsy, bill Z618 instead (T10).
- A Z-code is an independent operative procedure: if your major pre-operative visit was in the past 12 months, only a minor assessment (family physicians) or partial assessment (specialists) is payable before it that day; if the major pre-op visit is the same day, no other assessment before it is payable (SP4 §13).
Common rejections
- ADH: OHIP describes this as 'Cannot be billed together': Z617 was billed with Z638 or Z612, which exclude it (T3, T11).
