Diagnostic cystoscopy, with or without urethroscopy. A repeat within 30 days is Z607.
What it covers
Z606 is a diagnostic cystoscopy, with or without urethroscopy (T7). A repeat cystoscopy within 30 days is Z607 (T7).
Many cystoscopic procedures are billed as 'E' add-ons to Z606, such as ureteric catheterization (E775, E817), biopsy (E776), stent insertion (E818), electrocoagulation of tumours (E781) and removal of a foreign body or stone (E789) (T7).
Billing rules
- Independent operative procedure (Z code): if you did the major pre-operative visit in the prior 12 months, only a partial assessment is payable before it that day; if the major pre-operative visit is the same day, no other assessment before it (SP4).
- No extra claim for an examination under anaesthesia at the time of cystoscopy (T6).
- No claim for pre-cystoscopy dilatation of the male urethra unless stricture is the primary diagnosis; never for female urethral dilatation at cystoscopy (T6).
- Not payable with Z638 (endoscopic reflux treatment) (T3).
- No separate cystoscopy claim when done at the same time as bladder tumour excision (Z632–Z634) (T8).
- Anaesthesia for Z606 is claimed as E023C (6 basic units plus time), which replaces the listed units; E003C is not payable for Z606 anaesthesia (GP100, T7).
- A pre-operative consultation before cystoscopy under local anaesthesia and/or IV sedation is payable only if the chart shows it was medically necessary (GP18).
- Age premium of 10–30% for patients under 16 (GP64).
Often billed with
- E776, E781, E789, E817 and other cystoscopy add-ons on T7 (T6, T7).
- G869 bladder Botox injection, with which Z606 is payable (J51).
Common rejections
- ADH: OHIP describes this as 'Cannot be billed together': Z606 isn't payable with Z638, or as a separate cystoscopy with tumour excision Z632–Z634 (T3, T8).
