70 — Related procedure already claimed today by another physician

Another physician billed first

Another physician already claimed a corresponding procedure for this patient on the same day, so your claim isn't payable alongside it.

What to do: Check the health number and service date on your claim, then find out who billed the corresponding procedure.

Code
70
Description
Related procedure already claimed today by another physician

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

OHIP didn't pay this because another physician had already claimed a corresponding procedure for the patient that day. Find the other claim first.

What it means

Code 70 is an explanatory code on the Remittance Advice (RA). The Ministry's wording is that OHIP records show corresponding procedure(s) on this day claimed previously by another physician. Another physician's claim for the same patient and date was processed first, and under the payment rules your claim isn't payable alongside it.

The Schedule of Benefits pays some services only once, even when more than one physician is involved. Where more than one physician provides different parts of a listed service, only one fee is payable. Surgical procedures that include post-operative care, and fracture care, are given as examples: the parts can't be divided among physicians for claims, and the physicians share the payment between themselves (GP9).

D7 is the related code for a procedure not allowed with another procedure on the same claim. Code 36 means another practitioner, group or lab billed the service itself.

Common causes

  • Two physicians billed parts of the same procedure, such as a surgery and its post-operative care, or fracture care
  • A covering physician and the regular physician both billed the procedure that day
  • A wrong health number or service date that matched another physician's claim

How to fix it

  1. Check the health number and service date on your claim. If either is wrong, it may have matched someone else's claim.
  2. Find out which physician billed the corresponding procedure that day, for example through the hospital or the other physician's office.
  3. If only one fee is payable for the service, OHIP won't pay a second claim. The physicians involved share the fee between themselves (GP9).
  4. If your claim is for a separate service that is payable on its own, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the date of the RA the claim appears on. Attach the operative report or clinical notes.

Don't resubmit if

  • The other physician's claim covers the service. A new claim will come back the same way.
  • The claim is on the RA. Use an RAI.

How APEX handles it

APEX shows 70 on the claim line and has no correction rule for it. A line that was paid something is not added to the Correction Centre. If nothing on the visit was paid, the visit is listed under Outstanding for you to review; APEX never sends it on its own. If you are handling it through an RAI instead, use Ignore on it so it isn't sent again as a new claim. See how APEX works · Pricing
