Error code

EF8 — 'I' service codes can only be billed by ICHSCs

I code billed outside ICHSC

A fee code starting with 'I' was billed by someone other than an Integrated Community Health Services Centre, which alone can bill them.

What to do: Correct the code if it was a typing error; if done in an ICHSC, the facility bills the I code.

Code
EF8
Description
'I' service codes can only be billed by ICHSCs

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

EF8 means an 'I' service code was billed by someone other than an ICHSC. Only ICHSCs can bill I codes.

What it means

EF8 means the claim used a fee code starting with 'I', and those codes are exclusive to Integrated Community Health Services Centres (ICHSCs). Because the claim didn't come from an ICHSC, it was rejected.

Common causes

  • A physician billed an I code under their own billing number
  • A typing error turned another fee code into an I code

How to fix it

  1. Check the fee code on the claim.
  2. If it was a typing error, correct the code.
  3. If the service was done in an ICHSC, the facility bills the I code, not the physician.
  4. Resubmit any corrected claim. Resubmit within three months of the service date if you can. If that window has passed but the claim was first submitted on time, use the Ministry's stale-dated resubmission process.

Don't resubmit if

  • You aren't billing as an ICHSC. The I code will reject again.
