Error code
O9 — Not allowed in addition to post-natal care
Included in post-natal care
The visit is included in post-natal care already claimed; routine postpartum visits in hospital or at home are part of P007.
What to do: Check whether P007 or P008 was paid around that date; routine care of a well postpartum patient isn't payable separately.
- Code
- O9
- Description
- Not allowed in addition to post-natal care
Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
O9 means the visit is included in post-natal care already paid. Routine postpartum visits in hospital or home are part of P007.
What it means
Code O9 means OHIP did not pay this line separately because it is not allowed in addition to post-natal care that has been claimed.
In the Schedule of Benefits, postnatal care in hospital and/or home (P007) is the initial assessment of a well postpartum patient plus later assessments of the well patient in hospital or at home, until the patient's first office visit (Obstetrics preamble, K1). Those routine visits are part of P007 and are not billed one by one.
Common causes
- A hospital or home assessment of a well postpartum patient billed on top of P007
- Two physicians billing postpartum care for the same patient
- A visit for an unrelated or complicating illness billed without a diagnosis that shows it was not routine postpartum care
How to fix it
- Check whether P007 (or P008, postnatal care in office) was paid for the same patient around the same date.
- If the visit was routine care of a well postpartum patient, it is included and nothing more is payable.
- If the visit was for an illness resulting from or associated with the pregnancy, the Schedule allows added home or hospital visits on a per-visit basis (K2, paragraph 3). Send an RAI explaining the illness and the diagnosis. Send it through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date.
Don't resubmit if
- The visit was routine postpartum care of a well patient.
- The claim is already on your Remittance Advice. Use an RAI, not a new claim.
