- Invalid In-Patient/Out-Patient Indicator
Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
VS5 means the in-patient/out-patient indicator on a SEAMO claim isn't valid. Correct it with the value your SEAMO setup expects and resubmit.
What it means
VS5 is one of a group of error codes (VS1 to VS6) for SEAMO claims. The Ministry lists it only as "Invalid In-Patient/Out-Patient Indicator".
SEAMO is the Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization, one of the alternate funding arrangements named in the Schedule's Appendix Q. Its claims carry extra fields that ordinary fee-for-service claims don't.
How to fix it
- Check the in-patient/out-patient indicator on the claim against the values set up for your SEAMO billing.
- Correct it and resubmit.
- If you are not sure which value is valid, ask the people who manage SEAMO billing for your department.
Don't resubmit if
- The in-patient/out-patient indicator has not been changed.
