Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
VTC means a virtual care claim was sent without a modality indicator (K300A video or K301A phone). Add one and resubmit.
What it means
VTC ("Virtual Tech Code required") means a virtual care fee code was billed without the code that says which technology was used. The Ministry introduced this rejection in INFOBulletin 210904: from October 1, 2021, the temporary virtual care codes K080A to K083A needed a modality indicator on the same claim, for the same patient, service date and physician.
The modality indicators are K300A (video) and K301A (telephone, audio only). They are $0 tracking codes. The K080 to K083 codes ended on December 1, 2022. Under the current framework, comprehensive virtual care claims still need K300A or K301A (Schedule A70), and the Ministry announced new codes such as AT1 to AT4 for modality problems from that date.
Common causes
- The modality indicator was left off the claim
- The modality indicator was put on a separate claim or a different service date
How to fix it
- Check the chart for how the visit was done (video or telephone). The modality must be documented.
- Add one unit of K300A or K301A on the same claim, with the same service date, as the virtual service.
- Resubmit the corrected claim. Resubmit within three months of the service date if you can. If that window has passed but the claim was first submitted on time, use the Ministry's stale-dated resubmission process: one stale-dated claim file through MCEDT, then an email to [email protected] with the Error Reports showing the original submission date.
Don't resubmit if
- The chart does not say whether the visit was by video or telephone.
How APEX handles it
APEX reads your error reports and remittance advice from MCEDT and, for many claims rejected with this code, works out the fix for you to approve before it is resubmitted. See how APEX works · Pricing
