X3 — GI tract exam includes abdominal survey film

Included in the GI exam

The abdomen survey film wasn't paid separately because the GI tract exam paid on this claim already includes it.

What to do: Check the GI exam paid for the same patient and date; if the film was its survey film, nothing to fix.

Description
GI tract exam includes abdominal survey film

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

OHIP didn't pay the abdominal survey film separately because the GI tract exam includes it. Usually no action.

What it means

Code X3 means the gastrointestinal (GI) tract exam paid on this claim includes a survey film of the abdomen, so the separate abdomen film was not paid.

Several GI exams in the Schedule include the survey film "if taken": X108, X104 and X103 (oesophagus, stomach and duodenum), X112 (barium enema) and X113 (air-contrast colon) (Schedule D11). A survey film of the abdomen is a single view (D3).

Common causes

  • An abdomen film (such as X100) billed with a GI exam that includes the survey film

How to fix it

  1. Check the GI exam paid for the same patient and date.
  2. If the film was the survey film for that exam, there is nothing to fix.
  3. If you believe the payment is wrong, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date, with supporting details.

Don't resubmit if

  • You disagree with how a claim already on the RA was paid. Use an RAI, not a new claim.
