OHIP billing code for flu shot
Updated October 26, 2026
The OHIP billing code for a flu shot is G590A, influenza agent, $8.80. When the flu shot is the only reason for the visit, add G700A ($8.80), or Q590A instead if you are an FHO or FHN physician; intranasal flu vaccine is G592A.
| Code | What it is | Fee | When to bill it |
|---|---|---|---|
| G590A | Immunization, influenza agent | $8.80 | Every injected flu vaccine you give. |
| G700A | Basic fee-per-visit premium for (+) procedures | $8.80 | The flu shot (with or without other (+) procedures) is the only reason for the visit. Not for FHO/FHN physicians, who bill Q590A instead. |
| Q590A | Basic flu shot sole-reason premium for FHN and FHO physicians (instead of G700) | FHO or FHN physician, flu shot is the only reason for the visit, enrolled or non-enrolled patient. | |
| G592A | Administration of intranasal influenza vaccine | $1.65 | The flu vaccine is given intranasally instead of by injection. |
How to bill it
Bill G590A for the injection, with diagnostic code 896 (immunization).
If the flu shot was the only reason for the visit, add G700A. FHO and FHN physicians add Q590A instead of G700A.
If you also assessed the patient and bill an assessment, bill the assessment plus G590A, with no G700A or Q590A (J3; OMA Q-codes guide p.15).
Put G700A or Q590A on the same claim as G590A.
Billing rules
- Marked (+): when the vaccine is the only reason for the visit, add G700, once per patient per day however many vaccines or (+) procedures are given (J3, J54).
- G700 is not payable in hospital, and is paid at 15% of its fee for patients enrolled to a physician or group paid mainly by capitation (J3).
- Q590A is for FHN and FHO physicians only, for enrolled and non-enrolled patients, and isn't payable with G700 or with an assessment (AQ3; OMA Q-codes guide p.15; Agreement p.72 §11.7).
- Only one of Q590A or Q593A (COVID-19 sole-reason premium) is payable per patient per year (Agreement p.72 §11.7–11.8).
- Appendix Q lists Q590A at $8.80, while the FHO agreement and the OMA guide say $5.10; your remittance advice shows the amount paid (AQ3; Agreement p.72 §11.7).
- May be delegated to trained staff you employ, even when you aren't on site, for your own patient; the chart must be dated and name who gave it. Not payable when the person giving it is employed by a hospital, public health unit, long-term care home or Family Health Team (GP62–GP63).
- Payable on the same day as a counselling service by the same physician (GP58).
- FHO and FHN physicians remain eligible for the influenza preventive care bonus, which counts enrolled patients 65 and over vaccinated for the season by January 31 (Agreement p.65 §8.1; INFOBulletin 260401).
Diagnostic codes
- 896: Immunization, all types
Common rejections
- EPA: Network billing not approved. Q590A is payable only to FHN and FHO physicians; others get EPA and should bill G700A instead (OMA Q-codes guide p.15).
- D8: OHIP's description is 'Allowed with specific procedures only'. G700 is payable only with a (+) procedure, and the Ministry has said G700 is refused with D8 when it isn't on the same claim as the immunization code (J3; INFOBulletin 4544).
