General surgeon's specific assessment of a hospital in-patient: full history of the complaint and detailed exam of the affected area or system.

What it covers

C033 is a specific assessment for a non-emergency hospital in-patient in the General Surgery (03) listings (A107). The office version is A033.

A specific assessment is a specialist service, not in the patient's home, with a full history of the presenting complaint and a detailed exam of the affected part, region or system (GP23).

Billing rules

  • Limited to 1 per patient per physician in 12 months, or 2 if the second visit is for a clearly different diagnosis; extra ones are paid at a lesser fee (GP23).
  • As a surgeon, you cannot bill the hospital admission assessment unless it is the major pre-operative visit (the visit where the decision to operate is made) (SP2, GP40, GP4).
  • Only one consultation or assessment is payable per admission when care is transferred between physicians (GP40).
  • Routine visits after the admission assessment are subsequent visits (C032, C037, C039) (GP43).
  • For emergency calls and other special visits to in-patients, use the General Listings and special visit premiums (A107).

Often billed with

  • E082 MRP admission premium when it is your admission assessment as most responsible physician (GP42).
