Injection of a bursa, or injection and/or aspiration of a joint, ganglion or tendon sheath. Extra sites are G371.
What it covers
G370 is an injection of a bursa, or injection and/or aspiration of a joint, ganglion or tendon sheath (J53). Each additional site is G371, up to 5 (J53).
Aspiration of a bursa or complex joint, with or without injection, is G328 (extra sites G329). A complex joint is any joint other than the knee, or a knee whose anatomy is distorted by one of the inflammatory arthritides listed on J53.
Billing rules
- Bill G371 for each additional bursa, joint, ganglion or tendon sheath, to a maximum of 5 (J53).
- Only one of G370, G371, G328 and G329 per bursa, joint or complex joint (J53).
- Not payable with a surgical procedure on the same site or area (J53).
- Olecranon bursa aspiration and/or injection is billed only as G370/G371 (J53).
- Uninsured for intra-articular viscosupplementation, such as hyaluronic acid (J53).
- Add E542 when performed outside hospital (J53).
- E446 may be added to G370 or G371 when a joint injection must be repeated with image guidance after a failed blind attempt; imaging fees for the guidance are not payable to any physician (J53).
- Marked (+): add G700 when G370 is the sole reason for the visit (J3, J53).
- FHO: a Schedule 2 core service (Agreement p.77) and a Schedule 4 office procedure for the office procedures special payment (Agreement p.67 §8.7, p.93).
Often billed with
- E542 in the office (J53).
- G371 for additional sites (J53).
- G700 when the injection is the only reason for the visit (J3).
Common rejections
- EQ6: OHIP describes this as 'Referring provider number not registered with the Ministry': a referring provider number on the claim isn't a registered number; check or correct it.
- A3H: The line billed more services than OHIP allows; additional sites are billed as G371 (maximum 5), not as extra G370 services (J53).
- EH2: The health card version code on the claim doesn't match OHIP's record, often because the patient has a newer card; get the current version code and resubmit.
