Watch for: Once the patient is seen in your office, postnatal care is billed as P008, not P007.

Postnatal care of a well patient in hospital or at home, from the first postpartum assessment until the patient's first office visit.

What it covers

P007 is postnatal care in hospital and/or home (K8). The Obstetrics preamble defines it as the initial assessment of a well patient postpartum, with subsequent assessments of the well patient in hospital or at home until the patient's first visit to the physician's office; each visit has the specific elements of an assessment (K1).

Postnatal care in the office is P008 (K8).

Billing rules

• For a well postpartum patient, in hospital or at home, up to the first office visit; after that, office postnatal care is P008 (K1, K8).
• Illness resulting from or associated with the pregnancy that needs added home or hospital visits is claimed per visit (K2).
• The E082 MRP admission premium is not eligible for a patient admitted for obstetrical delivery (GP42 commentary).
• FHO: P007A counts toward the labour and delivery special payment (Agreement p.66 §8.4).

• P006 vaginal delivery or P009 attendance at labour and delivery, billed separately for the delivery (K6, K7).
