Postnatal care in the office: the postpartum assessment of a well patient seen in your office after delivery.
What it covers
P008 is postnatal care in the office (K8). Office postnatal care is an assessment under the Schedule (K1).
Postnatal care in hospital or at home is P007: the first assessment of a well postpartum patient and later assessments in hospital or at home, until the patient's first office visit (K1, K8).
Billing rules
- Bill P007 for postnatal care in hospital or at home up to the first office visit, and P008 for postnatal care in the office (K1, K8).
- Collection of a cervical cancer screening specimen during a routine postnatal visit that includes a pelvic exam is part of the visit: bill E430 (outside hospital or ICHSC), not G365 (A4, J47).
- E080 can be added to P008 for a first visit within two weeks of an acute in-patient discharge, but not when the admission was for obstetrical delivery unless the patient needed an ICU (GP28).
- E079 (initial smoking cessation discussion) may be added when its conditions are met (A56).
- P008 is not on the Appendix J virtual care lists, so it isn't payable as a video or phone visit (AJ1).
Often billed with
- E430 when a cervical screening specimen is collected at the visit outside hospital or an ICHSC (A4, J47).
- E079 for an initial smoking cessation discussion (A56).
- E080 only after a qualifying non-delivery acute admission, or a delivery admission with an ICU stay (GP28).
Common rejections
- VH8: The date of birth on the claim doesn't match OHIP's record for that health number; correct it and resubmit.
- A3H: The line billed more services of this code than OHIP's fee schedule master allows; check the number of services and resubmit.
- VH9: The health number on the claim isn't registered with the Ministry; check it against the patient's card and resubmit.
- EH2: The health card version code on the claim doesn't match OHIP's record, often because the patient has a newer card; get the current version code and resubmit.
