Explanation

Attendance at labour and delivery by a non-consultant who assists at the delivery or surgery, gives the anaesthetic, or resuscitates the newborn.
What it covers
P009 is payable to a physician other than an obstetric consultant for attending labour and delivery when that physician assists at vaginal delivery or surgery, gives the anaesthetic at a caesarean section or operative delivery, or resuscitates the newborn (K6-K7).
Attendance at labour is constant or periodic attendance through stages one and two of labour without completing the delivery: the initial assessment, later assessments as needed and ongoing monitoring (K1). Attendance at delivery has the specific elements of surgical assistants' services (K1, GP85).
Billing rules
- Only for a physician who is not an obstetric consultant, in one of the three roles above (K6).
- Not payable if any of the component services of attendance at labour isn't rendered (K7).
- A physician who claims P009 can't also claim anaesthesia or assistant units for the same patient (K7).
- No physician can claim P009 when the patient was transferred to a second physician for normal obstetrical care (K3).
- If the patient is transferred to another centre for delivery, bill P038 instead (K6).
- Attending only the delivery pays nil for a non-consultant; the obstetric consultant's attendance at delivery is P010 (K7).
- FHO: P009A counts toward the labour and delivery special payment (Agreement p.66 §8.4); the hourly rate payments don't apply to labour and delivery care (Agreement p.63 §6.5).
Often billed with
- E409 (evenings, weekends and holidays) or E410 (nights) for a non-elective delivery in those periods (GP103-GP104).

- E414 high risk obstetrical premium when one of its listed conditions is present (K8).
