Vaginal delivery. Includes repair of a first- or second-degree tear or episiotomy extension and ordinary immediate care of the newborn.

What it covers

P006 is vaginal delivery under Labour - Delivery in the Obstetrics section (K6). Labour and delivery services have the specific elements of IOP surgical procedures marked # (K1).

The fee includes repair of a first- or second-degree tear or episiotomy extension (K6, K8) and ordinary immediate care of the newborn (K3). Forceps or vacuum, breech, or shoulder dystocia needing advanced manoeuvres is operative delivery, P020 (K6).

Billing rules

  • Two or more infants delivered vaginally: P006 for the first, 85% of P006 for the second, and E500 for the third and each one after (K6).
  • Spontaneous vaginal deliveries between 20 and 23 weeks: only one P006, however many fetuses are delivered (K6).
  • If some fetuses are known to be stillborn, only the live deliveries are paid under the multiple-birth rules; if all are stillborn, one delivery fee is paid (K6).
  • Third- and fourth-degree tears are billed separately as P045 and P046; repair of the superficial transverse perineal muscle counts as second degree and is included (K8).
  • Detention isn't payable with obstetrics, and psychotherapy and hypnotherapy aren't payable on the same day by the same physician as an obstetrical delivery (GP31, GP56, GP58).
  • FHO: P006A counts toward the labour and delivery special payment (five or more services from P006A, P007A, P009A, P018A, P020A, P038A and P041A in a fiscal year, with a further tier at 23 patients); it isn't paid as well as the prenatal special payment (Agreement p.66 §8.3-8.4).
  • FHO: the hourly rate payments don't apply to obstetrical labour and delivery care (Agreement p.63 §6.5).

Often billed with

  • E409 (evenings, weekends and holidays) or E410 (nights) for a non-elective delivery in those periods (GP103-GP104).
  • E411 sole delivery premium when it is your only delivery that calendar day (K7).
  • E502 for a vaginal birth after caesarean section, successful or not (K6).
  • P023 oxytocin infusion when labour was induced or augmented for a recognized complication (K2, K10).
  • C989 special visit for the first obstetrical delivery of the day with sacrifice of office hours (K7, GP78).
