AH9 — Hospital diagnostic service not billable fee-for-service (covered by hospital budget)

Covered by hospital budget

This diagnostic service for a hospital patient is included in the hospital's global budget, so it isn't paid fee-for-service.

What to do: Don't resubmit if the patient was an in-patient; bill only the professional component where one is listed.

Description
Hospital diagnostic service not billable fee-for-service (covered by hospital budget)

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

AH9 means a diagnostic service for a hospital patient is covered by the hospital's budget, not paid fee-for-service. Usually there's nothing to fix.

What it means

AH9 means a diagnostic or miscellaneous service for a hospital patient was billed fee-for-service, but it is included in the hospital's global budget. It isn't on the Ministry's current published list of Error Report codes (December 2022); the Remittance Advice code DG carries the same message.

The Schedule says the technical component of a diagnostic service (listed as 'technical component', or in an 'H' or 'T' column) is not eligible for payment when the patient is a hospital in-patient, or attends the hospital for the test and is admitted to the same hospital within 24 hours for the same condition (GP10).

Common causes

  • A technical component (suffix B) billed for a hospital in-patient
  • A technical component billed for a hospital test when the patient was admitted within 24 hours for the same condition
  • A wrong in-patient/out-patient indicator or service location on the claim

How to fix it

  1. Check whether the patient was a hospital in-patient on the service date, or was admitted within 24 hours for the same condition.
  2. If so, the hospital funds that part of the service. Don't resubmit it. Bill only the professional component (suffix C) where the Schedule lists one.
  3. If the patient was not a hospital patient, correct the in-patient indicator, service location indicator or master number. Resubmit the corrected claim within three months of the service date if you can. If that window has passed but the claim was first submitted on time, use the Ministry's stale-dated resubmission process: one stale-dated claim file through MCEDT, then an email to [email protected] with the Error Reports showing the original submission date.

Don't resubmit if

  • The patient was an in-patient, or was admitted within 24 hours for the same condition. The technical fee isn't payable.
