Included in W010

Description
Included in the Long-Term Care (LTC) monthly management fee

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

This service is part of the long-term care monthly management fee (W010) paid for the patient this month, so it isn't paid separately.

What it means

DV means the service is included in the monthly management fee for a long-term care patient. W010 ($135.30, A20) pays the patient's most responsible physician (MRP) for routine care, management and supervision of a nursing home or home for the aged patient for a calendar month. It needs at least two W-prefix assessments that month, with exceptions for new admissions and deaths (GP51–GP52).

W010 includes listed services by any physician to the same patient during the month. These include subsequent visits (W003, W008), intercurrent illness visits (W121, with one exception), palliative visits (W872), admission assessments (W102, W104, W107), and periodic health visits and re-assessments (W109, W004). It also includes pronouncement or certification of death (W777, W771) unless done with a special visit, G271, K070–K072, and listed procedures and lab codes such as G489, G372, G373, G538, G590, G849, G365, G394, E430, E431, G379 and office lab tests (GP51).

When W010 is paid, none of those services by any physician to that patient in the month is payable (GP52). Some services aren't included: visits that qualify for a special visit premium, counselling or psychotherapy of 20 minutes or more, physician-to-physician telephone consultations, and services by a specialist who isn't the MRP or covering for the MRP (GP53).

Common causes

  • A W-prefix visit or assessment billed in the same month the MRP billed W010
  • A covering or second physician billing a visit or listed procedure for the patient that month
  • A listed procedure (for example an injection, venipuncture or flu shot) billed separately for a W010 patient
  • The MRP billing both W010 and its component W codes for the same month

How to fix it

  1. Check whether W010 was paid for this patient for the month of the service, and by whom.
  2. If the service is on the GP51 list, it's included. There is nothing to fix and no one else can bill it that month.
  3. If the service isn't included (a special visit, counselling of 20 minutes or more, a physician-to-physician phone consultation, or a specialist who isn't the MRP), send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date.
  4. For an MRP who saw the patient more than four times in a month for intercurrent illness after a W010 in the previous 11 months, the extra visits are billed as W121 with the manual review indicator (GP52).

Don't resubmit if

  • The service is a W010 component and W010 was paid for the month.
  • You want to bill the component W codes instead of W010 for the same month. The Schedule says not to submit both.

How APEX handles it

APEX has no correction rule for DV. If nothing else was paid for the patient on that service date, the claim is listed in the Correction Centre under Outstanding for your input. In most cases the right step is to leave it, or mark it Ignored, rather than resubmit. See how APEX works · Pricing
