Explanation

Most responsible physician's in-patient visit on the day after the admission assessment. One per hospital admission.
What it covers
C122 is paid to the physician identified as the patient's most responsible physician (MRP) for a subsequent visit on the day following the hospital admission assessment (GP44). It appears in the in-patient listings of Family Practice and most specialties (A13, A102).
A visit by a physician who isn't the MRP may be payable at a lesser visit fee (GP44).
Billing rules
- One per hospital admission, and only for the MRP (GP44).
- Not payable the same day as the MRP's discharge-day visit C124 or C126 (GP44).
- Not payable for a patient admitted for obstetrical delivery or newborn care (GP44).
- If the patient is transferred to another physician in the same hospital that day, only the physician who was MRP for most of the day is paid. A transfer to a different hospital makes the transfer day the admission day (GP44).
- Only one of C122 or C142 (first MRP visit after transfer out of an intensive care area) per admission (GP44, GP46).
- A qualifying service for the hospitalist premium: an automatic 17% increase for 12 months for Family Practice (00) or Internal Medicine (13) physicians who gave at least 1,500 qualifying services, on at least 110 days, in the qualifying fiscal year (GP103).
- FHO: C122A counts toward the special payment for hospital services (Agreement p.66, section 8.5; Schedule 3, p.90).
Often billed with
- E083 MRP subsequent visit premium, +30% (GP47).
- E084 instead of E083 on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, +45%, when the MRP is in one of the GP47 specialties (including 00 and 15). Only one of E083 or E084 per patient per day; a physician paid by a hospital for in-patient clinical services gets neither unless that pay is reduced by the premium amount (GP47).
