Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
A dermatologist's specific assessment of a hospital in-patient: full history of the complaint and detailed exam of the affected areas.
What it covers
A specific assessment needs a full history of the presenting complaint and a detailed exam of the affected parts, regions or systems (GP23). C023 is the non-emergency in-patient version (A95).
Billing rules
- Limit: one per patient per physician per 12 months; two with a clearly different, unrelated diagnosis. Extra ones pay as a lesser assessment (GP23).
- If you did not assess the patient for the same illness in the 90 days before admission, your admission assessment is a consultation or specific assessment; within 90 days it is a specific re-assessment (GP40).
- Only one consultation or assessment is payable per admission when care transfers between physicians in the same hospital (GP40).
- For emergency calls and other special visits to in-patients, use the General Listings (A prefix) with premiums instead (A95).
- Virtual care: video only (Appendix J AJ2), with an existing patient relationship and the K300A video indicator; not payable by phone (A66, A70). Virtual in-patient services need all of: you are not the MRP, no physician on staff with the expertise (documented by the referrer), and an in-person assessment by the referrer within 30 days (A69).
Common rejections
- AT2: This code is video only in Appendix J; billing it with the phone indicator K301A is not allowed (AJ2, A70).
