Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

A dermatologist's re-assessment of a hospital in-patient, with a full relevant history and exam of one or more systems.

What it covers

A specific re-assessment needs a full, relevant history and physical exam of one or more systems (GP23). C024 is the non-emergency in-patient version (A95).

An admission assessment counts as a specific re-assessment when the same physician assessed the patient for the same illness before admitting them (GP23, GP40).

Billing rules

  • Limit: two per patient per physician per 12 months, except those done for hospital admissions; extra ones pay as a lesser assessment (GP23).
  • If you assessed the patient for the same illness within 90 days before admission, your admission assessment is a specific re-assessment (GP40).
  • For emergency calls and other special visits to in-patients, use the General Listings (A prefix) with premiums instead (A95).
  • Virtual care: video only (Appendix J AJ2), with an existing patient relationship and the K300A video indicator; not payable by phone (A66, A70). Virtual in-patient services need all of: you are not the MRP, no physician on staff with the expertise (documented by the referrer), and an in-person assessment by the referrer within 30 days (A69).

Common rejections

  • AT2: This code is video only in Appendix J; billing it with the phone indicator K301A is not allowed (AJ2, A70).
