Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
The first visit by the most responsible physician after the patient is moved out of an intensive care area to an acute care bed in the same hospital.
What it covers
C142 is the first subsequent visit by the MRP after the patient's transfer from an intensive care area (including a neonatal intensive care unit) to an acute care bed in the same hospital (GP46).
The patient must have been receiving Critical Care, Ventilatory Support, Comprehensive Care or Neonatal Intensive Care services right before the transfer (GP46).
Billing rules
- Maximum one C142 per hospital admission, and only for visits by the MRP (GP46).
- Only one of C122 or C142 is payable for the same patient during the same admission (GP44, GP46).
- Not payable to the physician who provided the critical care, ventilatory, comprehensive or neonatal intensive care before the transfer, or if the patient was in the intensive care area only for monitoring (GP46).
- Not payable the same day as C124 or C126 (GP46).
- If the patient is transferred to another physician in the same hospital, only the physician who was MRP for most of the transfer day is paid (GP46).
- Add E083 (MRP premium) or, on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, E084, when you are the MRP; only one per patient per day (GP47).
- Qualifies for the automatic hospitalist premium for eligible FPs and internists with high in-patient volumes (GP103).
- FHO: counts toward the hospital services special payment (Agreement Schedule 3, p.90; §8.5, p.66). In-patient services to enrolled patients are paid full fee-for-service (Agreement p.64 §7.2).
Often billed with
- E083 or E084 MRP premium (GP47).
