Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Add-on to cystoscopy for catheterizing a ureter and injecting contrast (retrograde study), one side.

What it covers

E817 is added to a cystoscopy when the ureter is catheterized and opaque contrast is injected retrograde, unilateral (T7).

Ureteric catheterization with collection of a ureteral specimen is E775 (T7).

Billing rules

  • Add-on to cystoscopy (Z606 or Z607) (T7).
  • Bladder 'E' add-ons are payable with any S or Z code under the Bladder heading, or with Z626 or Z628, unless noted otherwise (T6).
  • Unilateral: each side is a separate service (T7).
  • Age premium of 10–30% for patients under 16 (GP64).

Common rejections

  • AD8: OHIP describes this as 'Not allowed alone': this add-on must be billed on the same claim as its base procedure, such as Z606 (T6, T7).
  • ADF: OHIP describes this as 'Corresponding Procedure Invalid, Omitted or Paid at zero': the base procedure (Z606) was missing, invalid or paid at zero, so the add-on can't be paid.
