Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Pre-scheduled case conference about an adult mental health out-patient, led by a psychiatrist as most responsible physician; billed in 10-minute units.

What it covers

K701 is a mental health out-patient case conference: the most responsible physician plus at least 2 other participants (physicians, regulated social workers, regulated health professionals, or staff of a Ministry-funded mental health community agency) about an adult out-patient (A34).

A case conference is a pre-scheduled meeting, in person, by video or by phone, to discuss and direct one patient's management. Educational rounds or journal clubs are not case conferences (A31).

Billing rules

  • Payable only when the most responsible physician is a psychiatrist (19); other participating physicians of any specialty may bill it (A34, A35).
  • Maximum 4 services per patient per physician per 12 months, and 8 units per physician per patient per day (A34).
  • No other case conference or telephone consultation is payable for the same patient the same day (A34).
  • Units are 10 minutes: 1 unit = 10 minutes, 2 = 16, 3 = 26, 4 = 36, then +10 minutes per unit up to 8 = 76 (A31). At least 10 minutes of patient-related discussion are needed (A32).
  • You must actively take part, and the record must show the patient, the start and stop time, the participants and the outcome or decision (A32).
  • Not payable if the required participants are paid by you, or if you are paid other than fee-for-service for the conference (A32).
  • For patients under 18 use K704; for hospital in-patients K121 (A34).

Common rejections

  • ADH: OHIP's message is 'Cannot be billed together': another case conference or telephone consultation was billed for the same patient the same day (A34).
