Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

AMS flags a multiple-procedure conflict: procedures billed together for the same patient that can't be paid as billed. Review and resubmit.

What it means

AMS is the Error Report code for 'Multiple Procedures'. The Ministry gives no more detail, but it points to a conflict between procedures billed for the same patient.

The Schedule has several rules for more than one procedure. When a surgeon does more than one procedure under the same anaesthetic, or within 14 days in the same admission for the same condition, the major procedure is paid in full and the others at 85% (SP2). Extra cardiac catheterization procedures at one sitting are paid at 50% (J9). Some procedures can't be billed together at all; the notes under each code say so.

Common causes

  • The same procedure billed more than once for the same patient and day
  • Two procedures the Schedule says can't be paid together
  • A wrong date or number of services

How to fix it

  1. List every procedure billed for this patient on the date and read the notes under each code.
  2. Remove any procedure that is included in another or not payable with it.
  3. If the procedures were separate and each is payable, make sure the claim shows that correctly: dates, number of services, and the right code for each.
  4. Resubmit the corrected claim within three months of the service date if you can. If that window has passed but the claim was first submitted on time, use the Ministry's stale-dated resubmission process: one stale-dated claim file through MCEDT, then an email to [email protected] with the Error Reports showing the original submission date.

Don't resubmit if

  • The procedure is included in, or not payable with, another one already billed.
