How to bill it

Test memory, attention, language, visuospatial function and executive function (A58).

Spend at least 20 minutes, consecutive or not, on the testing and scoring alone, all on the same day. Record the start and stop times (A58).

Bill K032A as one service. Bill any assessment for other problems the same day separately; the 20 minutes must be dedicated only to the neurocognitive assessment (A58).

Billing rules

  • Must be rendered personally by the physician (A58).
  • Acceptable batteries include the short form of the Behavioral Neurology Assessment (BNA) or the Dementia Rating Scale (DRS). The Mini-Mental State Examination (Folstein) isn't acceptable (A58).
  • Only one of K032 or K042 per physician per day. K042, the 46-minute extended assessment, is only for geriatrics, neurology and psychiatry (A58).
  • K032 isn't on the Appendix J list, so it can't be billed by video or phone (AJ1).
  • FHO: K032 is out of basket (not on Agreement Schedule 2, p.79).
  • K035 MTO reports: more than one per patient per 12 months by the same physician needs the manual review indicator and supporting documents (A59).

Diagnostic codes

  • 290: Senile dementia, presenile dementia
  • 331: Other cerebral degenerations

Common rejections

  • A3H: More services were billed than allowed. K032 is one service, not per unit, and only one of K032 or K042 is paid to you per day (A58).
