Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

30% premium on the hospital admission assessment when the admitting physician is the most responsible physician (MRP). Once per admission.

What it covers

E082 adds 30% to the admission assessment done by the most responsible physician (GP42).

An admission assessment is the initial assessment for admitting the patient. Depending on prior contact and specialty, it is a consultation, general or specific assessment, or re-assessment (GP40). For family physicians this includes A933/C933, C003 and C004 (GP41).

Billing rules

  • Once per patient per hospital admission (GP42).
  • Payable only when the admitting physician is the MRP. If the MRP doesn't do the admission assessment, no physician can bill E082 for that admission (GP42).
  • Not payable for transfers within the same hospital (GP42).
  • Not payable for admissions for obstetrical delivery, a well newborn, or day surgery (GP42).
  • Not payable if you're paid by the hospital or a hospital foundation for in-patient clinical services, unless that pay has been reduced by the E082 amount (GP42).
  • Applies only to the admission assessment, not to any other service or premium (GP42).
  • E082 counts toward the hospitalist premium's qualifying services, but the 17% hospitalist premium isn't paid on E082 itself (GP103).

Often billed with

  • C003, C004 or C933 admission assessment by a family physician (GP41).
  • E083 (+30%) or E084 (+45%, Saturday, Sunday or holiday) on the MRP's later subsequent visits (GP47).
  • C122 and C123 MRP visits on the first and second days after admission, one each per admission (GP44).

Common rejections

  • VH9: OHIP can't find the health number in its registration records; compare it digit by digit with the card (VH9 guide).
  • V18: The admission or first-visit date on the claim was missing or invalid; check the admission date entered for this in-patient stay.
  • EH2: The health card version code doesn't match OHIP's record; get the current version code and resubmit (EH2 guide).
  • A36: The service was already claimed by another practitioner; E082 is payable once per admission, to the MRP only (GP42).
