What it covers

E502 is an add-on for a vaginal birth after a previous caesarean section (VBAC). It is payable whether the VBAC is successful or unsuccessful (K6).

It is listed under the vaginal delivery codes P006 and P020 (K6). Labour and delivery services carry the specific elements of independent operative procedures marked #, so the fee does not include the premises, equipment, supplies and staff funded by the hospital (K1). The Surgical Preamble applies to obstetric codes (K2, rule 5).

Billing rules

• E502 is an add-on and is billed on the same claim as the delivery (K6).
• The delivering physician bills with suffix A (K3, note 16).
• FHO: physicians in Income Stabilization may bill E502A at full fee-for-service (Agreement App. J §3.6, p.99).

• P006 vaginal delivery or P020 operative delivery (K6).
• E414 high-risk obstetrical premium when one of its listed conditions is present (K8).

Common rejections

• AD9: 'Premium not allowed alone': E502 was billed without a delivery service on the claim (K6).
