- Description
- Coverage not in effect. Services on or after the 20th of this month won't be paid unless the subscriber fixes this
Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
J8 warns that the patient's coverage isn't in effect. Services on or after the 20th of this month won't be paid unless the patient fixes it.
What it means
J8 is a warning about the patient's OHIP coverage. The Ministry's records show coverage is not in effect. Services provided on or after the 20th of the month will not be paid unless the patient takes corrective action.
The line it appears on may still be paid. The warning is about future claims for this patient.
Common causes
- The patient's coverage lapsed or needs renewal
- The patient has not responded to a Ministry notice about their registration
How to fix it
- Tell the patient their OHIP coverage needs attention and advise them to contact ServiceOntario.
- Before seeing the patient again, run a health card validation check.
- Hold claims for services on or after the 20th until the coverage issue is resolved, then submit them within three months of the service date.
Don't resubmit if
- Coverage is still not in effect for the service date.
